The 45-year-old will receive a contract until the summer of 2025, as the top Dutch club announced on Wednesday. Schmidt had not extended his expiring contract and is leaving PSV.
“It has always been my dream to become the head coach of PSV“said van Nistelrooij, who scored 62 goals for Eindhoven between 1998 and 2001. Van Nistelrooij ended his career in 2012. At Eindhoven, the former HSV player was the forward coach of the PSV academy and assistant coach of the first team. He also coached the U19s, before taking over the U21s last summer.
At the 2020 European Championship, van Nistelrooij, who scored a total of twelve goals in 36 games for Hamburger SV between 2010 and 2011, joined the coaching staff as an assistant. He had already worked for Oranje between 2014 and 2016.
After finishing runners-up in the previous season, PSV still has good chances in the championship race this season with German ex-world champion Mario Götze, plays in the cup final against Ajax Amsterdam and is also in the Europa Conference League.
