Van Klinken misses second medal at European Championships in discus throw | NOW

Jorinde van Klinken just failed to win a medal in the discus throw at the European Athletics Championships in Munich on Tuesday. The Drentse had to settle for fourth place.

The 22-year-old Van Klinken achieved a distance of 64.43 meters in her best attempt. She was 77 centimeters short for the bronze, which was claimed by the German Claudine Vita.

Sandra Perkovic successfully defended her European title. The Croatian came to a distance of 67.95 meters and captured her sixth European title in a row. Perkovic threw only 8 centimeters further than Germany’s Kristin Pudenz, who took the silver.

On Monday, Van Klinken still won bronze in the shot put. The gold in that part went to Jessica Schilder in a Dutch record, who became the first Dutch athlete ever to take the European title in the shot put.

Van Klinken also finished fourth in the discus throw at the World Cup in Eugene last month. Perkovic was then second behind the Chinese Feng Bin.

Foppen finishes fifth at 5,000 meters

Mike Foppen finished fifth in the 5,000 meters in 13.27.93. The 25-year-old Dutchman advanced from tenth to fifth place in the last lap.

The European title went to defending champion Jakob Ingebrigts. The Norwegian crossed the finish line in 13.21.13 and was ahead of Spaniard Mohamed Katic (13.22.98) and Italian Yemaneberhan Crippa (13.24.83). Ingebrigtsen also became world champion in the 5,000 meters in July.

Sven Roosen finished tenth in the decathlon. The 21-year-old Dutchman came after a personal best (4.18.43) on the closing 1,500 meters with 8,021 points.

Niklas Kaul climbed from third to first place thanks to his excellent performance in the 1,500 meters. The German left the Swiss Simon Ehammer (8,468) and the Estonian Janek Oiglane (8,346) behind with 8,545 points in the final standings. Dutch champion Rik Taam dropped out earlier in the day due to a heel injury.

In the 100 meters there was gold for the Italian Lamont Marcell Jacobs. The Olympic champion crossed the finish line in 9.95. In the women’s race, the European title on the queen number went to the German Gina Lückenkemper (10.99), while the British title defender Dina Asher-Smith was injured in the final.
