Van Gogh House New Amsterdam closed longer in Van Gogh year: ‘Very unfortunate’

The Van Gogh House in New Amsterdam/Veenoord will also be closed this summer. The renovation of the building where the artist spent some time is delayed. This means that the Van Gogh House is largely closed in the Vincent van Gogh year.

The foundation behind the Van Gogh House had initially hoped to be able to open in mid-June, but that will not work. “It is a combination of circumstances,” says chairman Heily Stoel. The foundation is now heading towards the end of September. “But that is really impossible to say. It is a great pity.”

It’s according to the program of the Van Gogh year, the intention is that lectures will be given in October and November in the renovated Van Gogh House.

This year it is exactly 140 years ago that Vincent van Gogh visited the southeast of Drenthe. In the autumn of 1883 he stayed for a few months in what was then the Scholte lodging house. The snow-white building can still be found in its original state along the Verlengde Vaart in Veenoord. On the top floor, the artist moved into a small room from which he lived and worked.

The Van Gogh House has been telling about the stay of the world-famous artist in Southeast Drenthe for more than twenty years. Until the beginning of this year, this was done with text, photos and images. Soon, visitors will enter his story through technical and audiovisual applications.

The bankruptcy of construction group Emmen also plays a role in the delay. It is now known that the bankrupt contractor is making a restart under the name Juya Bouw, which will also continue with the renovation of the Van Gogh House.
