Van Gogh House in Veenoord/New Amsterdam is still open this summer

The Van Gogh House will open its doors this summer after all. The former Scholtens guest house in Veenoord/New Amsterdam should actually keep its doors closed due to a renovation that was delayed. That was extra sour because this year is the Van Gogh Year.

From next weekend, the museum will still be open on Saturday and Sunday. It is a limited opening, because the renovation that started earlier this year is not yet finished. The real opening is not until the autumn.

“Many people let us know that they were very sorry that there was nothing to do all summer,” says chairman Heily Stoel-Snater. “Those signals also came from the province of Drenthe and the municipality of Emmen. It would be nice if there was something to do in New Amsterdam/Veenoord in the Van Gogh Year 2023 and with the opening of the Van Gogh exhibition in the Drents Museum on 11 September coming up.”

‘Every now and then a mess’

That gauntlet has been picked up. “Although it will still be a mess inside every now and then, our volunteers certainly see an opportunity to offer visitors a pleasant and interesting hour.”

You can also visit Vincent’s ‘little room’, where Van Gogh spent his time in a lodging house. That place will remain intact, according to the chairman.

This year it is 140 years ago that the famous artist visited Southeast Drenthe. In the autumn of 1883 he stayed for several months in the former lodging house Scholtens. Today it is the Van Gogh House.
