Van Gerwen started the fifth round with a 6-3 win over Welshman Gerwyn Price. However, this duel was not as easy as the final score suggests. ‘MVG’ was 3-1 behind, partly due to poor throwing, but he still managed to turn the game around nicely.

Decisively
Also in the semi-final, against the Englishman Nathan Aspinall, ‘Mighty Mike’ fell behind 3-1. Aspinall hit two twelve darters early in the game. But after the Englishman missed two darts in the sixth putVan Gerwen managed to make up for his backlog and then went on and on with, among other things, a thirteen and eleven darter.

In the final, the Vlijmenaar was immediately in the game. He wrote the first three legs in his name. Then ‘The Ferret’ managed to narrow his deficit to 4-3, but ‘Mighty Mike’ again ran away from the Welshman via a twelve dart finish with a 106 finish. In the ninth put Clayton got another shot at bullseye to stay in the game, but missed. Van Gerwen then finished the game decisively.

“I was there when I had to be there”
Thanks to his overall victory in Exeter, Van Gerwen distances himself further from the competition in the Premier League. He is now six points clear of first pursuer Michael Smith and Nathan Aspinall. They have both won nine points in this darts competition between the eight best darts players of the PDC association. Gerwyn Price is fourth, with eight points.

“Every week there is pressure in the Premier League, you have to perform,” says Van Gerwen. “Then it’s nice to win. You have to believe in your abilities and I was at my best this evening when I had to be there.”
