Dirk van Duijvenbode and Danny Noppert failed to guide the Netherlands to the final of the World Cup of Darts. The two lost on Sunday in Frankfurt with 2-0 against Wales.
Noppert had little to say in the first single match against former world champion Gerwyn Price: 1-4. Van Duijvenbode then also lost to Jonny Clayton: 2-4.
As a result, the decisive doubles match did not even have to be played anymore. Wales will face Australia in the final on Sunday evening, which with Simon Whitlock and Damon Heta surprisingly beat the England 2-0 of Michael Smith and James Wade.
The Dutch duo had convincingly settled Northern Ireland (2-0) earlier in the day. Previously, Ireland and Brazil were also eliminated without losing a game.
The Netherlands cannot make a fist against Wales
Against Wales, the tournament winner of 2020, the Netherlands could not continue that good line. Noppert was broken in all his own legs and cashed in only one of his eight chances for a double.
Van Duijvenbode then knew that a defeat would mean elimination. In his match against Clayton it went evenly for a long time, but a break at 3-2 was fatal for ‘Aubergenius’.
Noppert would actually form a duo with Michael van Gerwen in Frankfurt. However, the three-time world champion withdrew because he is having surgery on his right wrist, which has been bothering him for some time.
The Netherlands has won the World Cup of Darts, which has been in existence since 2010, four times. This makes the Netherlands co-record holder with England, which can also forget a fifth title due to the loss against Australia.
