Confederalism is the biggest political lie of the past decade. That is what Vlaams Belang chairman Tom Van Grieken said during the Sporenviering in Bruges, the party’s celebration for the Flemish holiday on 11 July. He argues for Flemish independence by means of a unilateral decision.

In his speech, Van Grieken is very strict with N-VA, the party that strives for a confederal system. “There is not even a two-thirds majority in favor of De Wever’s confederalism. Not with Bouchez’s Walloon liberals and not with Lachaert’s Flemish liberals. There is no confederate will among Rousseau’s socialists and not even among Magnette’s Walloon socialists. The latter recently publicly shot down the N-VA track,” said the VB chairman.

He therefore calls on Flemish Prime Minister Jan Jambon to change the gun. “Together with Vlaams Belang, opt for a unilateral declaration of sovereignty in 2024, so that we can work towards an orderly division of estate. Together we can finally give the Flemish what they want: a right-wing and Flemish policy.

“If there is a V majority in 2024 (a majority with N-VA and VB, ed.), it must serve to dismantle Belgium. Only in an independent Flanders can we regain control of our own borders, strengthen our purchasing power and keep Flanders Flemish”, concludes Van Grieken.
