Van Dijk saves late from the point: Holland preserves their chance at the European Championship

The Dutch national football team has come a lot closer to their ticket to the 2024 European Championships in Germany.

Thanks to a late penalty goal by Virgil van Dijk (90th + 3), Bonds coach Ronald Koeman’s team won 1-0 (0-0) in Greece and took second place. To qualify for the European Championship, Oranje still needs to win one of the two remaining qualifying games.

Wout Weghorst (28th) could have taken the lead. However, he missed the great chance to make it 1-0 when his weak penalty shot was missed by former German U-21 goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos.

Overall, the Dutch didn’t make enough use of their clear superiority; Steven Bergwijn (44th, 47th) also couldn’t overcome Vlachodimos. RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons (53′) shot just wide – shortly before the end, van Dijk saved the victory with a penalty kick.

In Group B, France had already secured their ticket to the European Championships last Friday. The vice world champion is the last qualifying opponent for Greece on November 21st. The Dutch still play against Ireland (18th) and Gibraltar (21st).
