Van der Poel second in time trial Giro, keeps pink jersey

Mathieu van der Poel finished second in the time trial on the second day of the Giro d’Italia. With this, the Dutch cyclist from Alpecin-Fenix ​​keeps the pink jersey, which he obtained a day earlier after winning the first stage. The winner of the time trial is Briton Simon Yates (BikeExchange–Jayco), who was three seconds faster than Van der Poel.

Van der Poel finished after 11.53 minutes on the stage of more than 9 kilometers in the Hungarian capital Budapest. The Dutchman Tom Dumoulin of Jumbo-Visma finished third with a time of 11.55 minutes. In the general classification, Yates is in second place and Dumoulin in third, after Van der Poel in first place.

The Giro d’Italia started Friday in Budapest and will last until the end of the month. Sunday is the last stage in Hungary, a flat ride from the southeastern Kaposvár to the centrally located Balatonfüred on the lake of the same name. Monday is the first rest day. Then the riders will fly to Sicily, where the Tour of Italy continues on Tuesday.
