Van der Poel records second victory in criterium in Surhuisterveen after Tour | NOW

Mathieu van der Poel has won a cycling criterion after the Tour de France for the second day in a row. Just like Monday in Boxmeer, he was the first to cross the line in Surhuisterveen on Tuesday.

Van der Poel referred Mark Cavendish to second place in Friesland. Dylan Groenewegen finished third.

In Surhuisterveen there was also 10,000 euros ready for the winner of an intermediate sprint. That became a prey for Fabio Jakobsen, the winner of the second stage in the Tour de France.

For Van der Poel, the Tour came to an end after ten stages. After a difficult week and a half, he decided to give up due to a lack of form.

The 27-year-old rider from Alpecin-Deceuninck will be at the start in more criteriums this summer. He rides in Chaam, Heerlen and Roosendaal.

Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard is letting the lucrative races for the time being. The Dane was in the Netherlands on Tuesday to be honored at the Jumbo headquarters in Veghel.
