Van Bommel immortalizes himself in Belgium

Mark van Bommel, former Bundesliga professional at FC Bayern, led Belgian football club Royal Antwerpen to their first league title in 66 years, securing the double for the club. Antwerp was last Belgian champion in 1957, it is the fifth championship for the club.

In an exciting league final, Antwerp drew 2-2 (0-1) at KRC Genk to clinch the title. Captain and veteran Toby Alderweireld redeemed his team in the fourth minute of added time.

Competitors Union Saint-Gilloise suffered a 3-1 defeat at previous champions Club Brugge to finish third, level on points with Genk.

On April 30, Antwerp celebrated their fourth cup victory with a 2-0 win over KV Mechelen at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels. In the last three seasons, the championship title went to FC Brugge, who finished last in the separately played championship round.

At his last coaching station in the Bundesliga, van Bommel was fired at VfL Wolfsburg in October 2021 after just 115 days in office. In Antwerp, the 46-year-old took over at the end of May 2022.
