The indie rock band publishes the track list and the first concert date for the new work.
On Tuesday (February 6), Vampire Weekend posted a cryptic video on their Instagram account that appeared to announce a new musical project with the caption “OGWAUteaser1.mp4.” Now the trio is making it official: In a 30-second album trailer, they announce their fifth LP ONLY GOD WAS ABOVE US for April 5th, 2024.
The first singles will be released in February
The clip consists of a wild compilation of various scenes. However, they all have one thing in common: they show New York City. In quick jumps we see, among other things, a man jumping sideways through an old New York subway car, a French horn, a recording studio, the World Trade Center, and sheet music with the word “Hope.” Typically for Vampire Weekend, the notes are not chosen by chance, as “Hope” is also the title of the last track on the new record. It is already known that the track will contain the words “I hope you let it go/Our enemy’s invincible”. The first two singles “Capricorn” and “Gen-X Cops” will be released on February 16th.
Ezra Koenig, Chris Tomson and Chris Baio will then celebrate the album release with a concert at the Moody Amphitheater in Austin on April 8th. The performance will take place at 12 noon (local time) to provide musical accompaniment to the total solar eclipse.
New York as a source of inspiration
With ONLY GOD WAS ABOVE US, Vampire Weekend refers to a headline that appeared in the New York Daily News in 1988. She was referring to an Aloha Airlines flight where an explosion ripped off the roof of the plane. The album cover also shows, among other things, a man sitting in an empty subway and reading this very edition of the newspaper.
According to Rolling Stone reports, the band took inspiration for the album from 20th century New York City and recorded it in Manhattan, Los Angeles, London and Tokyo. Ezra Koenig, who wrote the lyrics in 2019 and 2020, produced the album with his long-time collaborator Ariel Rechtshaid.
