Valtteri Bottas watched the first practice session of the Mexican GP from the sidelines.
Alfa Romeo test driver Theo Pourchaire got a Finnish car at his disposal, but even his joy was short-lived, because technical problems kept the Frenchman in the pits.
The team’s mechanics were able to locate and repair the fault before the start of the second practice session. Bottas returned to his car at the Hermanos Rodríguez motor track.
The Mexico GP center is one of Bottas’ favorite arenas in the F1 circus. He got on the podium there already at Williams in 2015.
This season, the Finn is not fighting for the podium positions, because Alfa Romeo’s speed in the races is barely enough for the top ten.
However, it is precisely in Mexico that the Swiss team can surprise. Last year, Bottas succeeded perfectly in qualifying, being on the sixth starting grid.
Friday’s training pace also promises good things. The Finn was fourth on the leaderboard, just 0.003 seconds after taking third place Charles Leclerc slower.
Bottas even left behind the champion team Red Bull by Sergio Pérez. Instead, Ikköskuski of the stable Max Verstappen was again the fastest of the entire game. He left McLaren by Lando Norris 0.119 seconds away.
The difference between the Dutchman and Bottas was also only 0.269 seconds.
