Vaccination round with modified corona vaccine to start on September 19

The new round of vaccinations with the modified corona vaccine will start on Monday 19 September reports the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport Thursday. People in risk groups and healthcare workers who work with patients are the first to be eligible for the so-called ‘repeat shot’. They will receive an invitation from 13 September, after which they can make an appointment with the GGDs.

Minister Ernst Kuipers (Public Health, D66) writes to the House of Representatives that following a recent OMT advice, it was decided to use the renewed vaccines from BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna for the new vaccination round. Last week, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved the new vaccines, which provide better protection against the Omikron variant of the virus.

After the healthcare workers and people in risk groups, recipients of the flu shot are eligible for a new vaccination. They will receive an invitation from their GP from the beginning of October. When it’s their turn, anyone over the age of twelve can get a repeat shot. The condition is that they have received previous vaccinations. The new vaccines can only be used as a repeat shot, “and are not intended as a basic vaccination,” writes health minister Kuipers. In addition, there must be at least three months between the previous vaccination and the repeat shot.
