UWV expects job cuts in Drenthe next year

The number of jobs in Drenthe will continue to grow this year, but in 2024 this will make way for job shrinkage. This is evident from an analysis by UWV.

Between 2020 and 2022, the number of jobs in our province grew by almost 6,800. “The mild economic recession is currently causing a limited cooling of the labor market. According to the forecast, job growth will slow down,” the UWV writes.

The number of jobs in industry, financial services, transport and construction will shrink in 2024, while the number of jobs in ICT and wholesale will continue to grow.

Despite the job cuts, the tightness on the Drenthe labor market continues. According to the UWV, this is related to an aging population, a mismatch between education and the labor market and changing demand from employers.

Currently, 24 percent of the residents in Drenthe are 65 years or older. In addition, almost 23 percent of the residents are between the ages of 50 and 65. This age group is gradually moving towards retirement age. The influx of young people is not large enough to absorb their departure from the labor market. “As a result, the shortage will continue for the time being,” the UWV expects.
