User opinion 1. FC Nuremberg: Promotion to the Bundesliga is the motto

Fan series for the 2nd league

With the help of the community, Transfermarkt will take a detailed look at the 56 teams in the Bundesliga, Bundesliga 2 and Bundesliga 3 in the coming weeks. Which players are the fans looking forward to the most, where is there room for improvement and what is in the squad for 2022/23 for your favorite club? For this we asked around in the forums and picked up assessments – in league two we continue with user “III-Draakon” and 1. FC Nürnberg.

How do you rate the squad of 1. FC Nürnberg?

The sporting management of the FCN has managed to address the biggest weakness with the previous transfers: the Sturmzentrale, where Felix Lohkemper only played one league game due to injury, Manuel Schäffler did not build on the form of the previous year and Pascal Köpke after recovering from a cruciate ligament tear not permanently in the starting eleven was able to establish. Therefore, while in 2021/22 people often improvised with Nikola Dovedan and Lukas Schleimer in the top striker, two king transfers are available in the new season with the clippers Kwadwo Duah and Christoph Daferner, both of whom have already scored. In addition, there is Manuel Wintzheimer, a versatile attacker with experience in the second division.

In defence, the already strong central defender block was supplemented by the Leverkusen loanee Sadik Fofana (as a replacement for Mario Suver, to BVB II), who has already made a positive impression in the friendlies. In the 2nd league so far there was a cure. The experienced Welshman James Lawrence also joined from FC St. Pauli. After the departure of top talent Kilian Fischer (to VfL Wolfsburg), Jan Gyamerah was signed as a replacement at right-back, while new signings Erik Wekesser, Louis Breunig and homegrown Nathaniel Brown are available on the left. With this oversupply, one would be prepared if Tim Handwerker is still sold despite the contract extension.

Where do you see a need for improvement by Deadline Day?

While Christian Mathenia is the undisputed number one, I’m skeptical about substitutes in the goalkeeping position. Carl Klaus has not been able to convince me in the few appearances he has had so far. After the departure of Patric Klandt (destination unknown), neither our number two nor our number three (Jan Reichert, promoted from the U23) have the necessary experience. Here I would welcome another commitment. However, since Mathenia has been tied for the long term, it will be difficult to find an adequately strong number two.

We are well positioned in midfield, the promising Jens Castrop (player on loan from 1.FC Köln since January 2022) should see more appearances this season, and Lino Tempelmann, voted “Cluber of the Season” by the fans, is going into his second season on loan. 2023 should be exciting after the end of these two loan deals.

In view of FCN’s financially tense situation, transfer proceeds are mandatory. In addition to Fischer and Suver, Adam Gnezda Cerin, who was no longer planned, has already been sold – unfortunately undervalue despite allegedly great interest from other clubs. After all, Asger Sörensen brought a transfer fee of millions. The previously courted Fabian Nürnberger could still be considered as a departure, as of now it looks like he will stay. Another sales candidate is Erik Shuranov, in whom there is said to be interest from abroad.

What do you expect from the playful appearance of the team?

We will playfully play the typical “Klauß-Ball”, tactically sophisticated and ball-possession-oriented. I expect that we will appear much more self-confident, especially in the offensive, which has been heavily upgraded, after I lacked the last conviction in some games last season, especially in the forward gear.

What’s in store for 1. FC Nürnberg in 2022/23?

The “A-word” will hover all the more over this season of the “Glubbs” after you could get a taste of the three top places last season. Anything between first and fifth place is conceivable for me, and as a club fan you should be rightly disappointed with this squad. Even if FCN has clearly grown on him: I assume that after a strong season, if it does not result in promotion, coach Robert Klauß will not be able to hold on in the summer of 2023. In this respect, the motto – albeit internally – can only be to aim for the Bundesliga.
