User opinion 1. FC Heidenheim: Solid squad despite bloodletting

Fan series for the 2nd league

With the help of the community, Transfermarkt will take a detailed look at the 56 teams in the Bundesliga, Bundesliga 2 and Bundesliga 3 in the coming weeks. Which players are the fans looking forward to the most, where is there room for improvement and what is in the squad for 2022/23 for your favorite club? For this we asked around in the forums and picked up assessments – in league two we continue with user “Tziward” and 1. FC Heidenheim.

How do you rate the 1. FC Heidenheim squad?

As has often been the case in recent years, the FCH had to let some top performers go this summer and fill the vacancies. Despite the bloodletting, I would describe our squad as rock solid. Overall, we have a lot of experience in the second division and many supporters have been with the club for a long time. Top performers such as Kevin Müller, Marnon Busch, Patrick Mainka and Tim Kleindienst embody the high level of the second division and guarantee a certain level of stability.

Despite the departure of Oliver Hüsing, the defense is the showpiece of the team and defender Mainka is one of the strongest defenders in the league. The storm is also very strong, especially with Tim Kleindienst and Christian Kühlwetter. I see the problem more in the middle. At headquarters we have a few young players like Kevin Sessa, Dzenis Burnic and Jan Schöppner who have a lot of potential but are still inconsistent in their performance. The departures of Robert Leipertz and Tobias Mohr, who were our two best assist providers last season, weigh particularly heavily. At least one of the two construction sites was adequately closed with Jan-Niklas Beste.

Where do you see a need to catch up by Deadline Day?

There is currently a need to catch up, especially on the offensive flank. With Jan-Niklas Beste, Tim Köther and Florian Pick, who has returned on loan, we currently only have three players in the squad for these two positions. In addition, Köther still seems to need some time to get used to and was not in the squad on the first day of the game. A player I could well imagine for this position would be Benjamin Goller, who is said to have been interested in last summer. Players like Sarpreet Singh or Aaron Opoku are also discussed in the Heidenheim forum. Many Heidenheim fans see another construction site in central attacking midfield. Since Dovedan’s departure three years ago, the gap he left has never really been filled. What could be more obvious than bringing Nikola Dovedan back to Brenz, who has been without a club for a short time? In the past few years, there should have been contact between the two parties from time to time. Nevertheless, a transfer does not seem particularly realistic at the moment.

What do you expect from the playful appearance of the team?

Frank Schmidt is currently entering his 16th season as a coach with FCH. His handwriting has been clearly visible for many years, so I don’t expect any major changes this season either. As in previous years, the FCH will build on a stable defense and act with a fast vertical offensive play on the flanks. Basic virtues such as passion, commitment and fighting spirit are more important in Heidenheim football than control of the game and playful dominance.

What’s in store for 1. FC Heidenheim in 2022/23?

Despite the departures of Hüsing, Mohr and Leipertz, there is great consistency in Heidenheim. On the one hand, this is due to the remaining basic structure, as well as to coach Schmidt. I therefore assume that FCH can also play a good role this season. With a normal course, a place in the upper midfield should be realistic. If you can improve the conversion of chances compared to last season, I think another placement in the top third of the table is possible. In order to actually be able to target promotion places again after the 2019/20 season, I think there is still a lack of quality in the attacking midfield.
