“I was devastated”
Giovanni Reyna was apparently about to be kicked out of the US national team at the World Cup. Head coach Gregg Berhalter confirmed that he almost sent one player home, but did not name the player. Several US media reported, including journalists Tom Bogert such as “The Athletic“That it was the 20-year-old BVB professional. In the evening, Reyna spoke up via Instagram.

The midfield talent only played a supplementary role in the US team at the World Cup, which was eliminated by the Netherlands in the round of 16. Twice Reyna did not play at all, in the group duel with England and in the loss to Oranje he was on the pitch for a total of 52 minutes. With a market value of 35 million euros, he was the second most valuable player in the United States World Cup squad.

“At this last World Cup we had a player who clearly didn’t live up to expectations on and off the pitch. As employees, we sat together for hours thinking about what we would do with this player. We were ready to book a plane ticket home, it was that extreme,” Berhalter is quoted as saying on charterworks.com.
On Monday night, Reyna then released a statement via Instagram that he wanted to make given the continued reporting of what he had assumed was team internals. Before the tournament, Berhalter had already explained to him his subordinate role in the United States’ World Cup squad. “I was devastated,” Reyna explained. He then let his emotions run free and let the best of him be stolen, as he said. His training and his behavior were influenced by this. Reyna wrote: “I apologized to my teammates and my coach and was told I was forgiven.” After that, he shook off the dissatisfaction and did his best. Nevertheless, he was also irritated that Berhalter took the topic to the outside world.
It was previously said that Reyna acted listlessly in training and reacted inappropriately to his role as a substitute, for example throwing away his shin pads during the Wales game. “The other thing we said to him was that he needed to apologize to the group. But he must say why he is apologizing. It has to go deeper than just ‘I’m sorry guys,'” Berhalter said. After the discussion, there was no longer a problem with the player.
