US to remove non-essential personnel from Shanghai

The U.S. Department of State is evicting non-essential U.S. employees and their families from the U.S. consulate in Shanghai. The reason is the wave of corona cases in the Chinese city and the response of the authorities.

Earlier on Monday, Shanghai announced an easing of the lockdown. For some of the 26 million residents of the largest Chinese city, the relaxation meant that they can leave their homes for the first time since the end of March.
