US senator proposes abortion ban after 15 weeks of pregnancy | Abroad

Graham, a close confidant of former US President Donald Trump, said the bill is a “consensus solution”. By banning abortion after 15 weeks, America would be “federally aligned with the rest of the world,” the South Carolina state senator said at a news conference. He repeatedly referred to France, where the term for voluntary termination of pregnancy is 14 weeks.

However, the bill would maintain all abortion bans passed by a dozen conservative states since the Supreme Court ruling.

The proposal has sparked outrage on the Democratic side. The text “would deprive women of their rights in all 50 states,” White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said. “Make no mistake, if given the chance, Republicans will pass even more draconian laws than this one,” added Democratic Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.
