‘CNN’ notes that it is not clear when the missiles were delivered. However, the US is said to have decided in recent weeks to secretly deliver the missiles in order to outpace the Russians. After all, Russia knows the range of the missiles and the US was concerned that they would place their equipment and weapons beyond their range, it said.
The channel also reports – still on the authority of US officials – that Ukraine used the missiles this week to attack the Russian airports in Berdiansk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine.
‘The Wall Street Journal’ had previously reported this. Ukrainian forces reported on X that the attack had destroyed several Russian helicopters, an ammunition depot and an anti-aircraft system, but did not say whether they had used ATACMS.
Ukraine had been asking for the missiles for months. Some variants of the ATACMS can strike targets up to 300 kilometers away.
