• US Secretary of Transportation critical of driving assistants
In an interview with Bloomberg, US Secretary of Transportation Buttigieg criticized Tesla’s autopilot. He doubted whether the autopilot would actually serve its intended purpose. Meanwhile, the politician was positive about the electric charging stations for electric vehicles. It seems that the United States is changing to counteract the climate crisis.
Criticism of the autopilot
Every Tesla vehicle has the so-called autopilot, which should enable completely autonomous driving in the future. However, the driver assistant came to the attention of the US transportation agency NHTS after numerous accidents occurred in which Tesla electric cars crashed into parked ambulances despite the autopilot being switched on. At the same time, the traffic authority received several hundred complaints, as Bloomberg reports. The driving assistant would brake unexpectedly at high speeds.
The US transportation authority NHTS then published a document in which they announced the investigation of the Tesla autopilot. Large amounts of data are to be examined. In addition, it should be checked to what extent the assistant increases the risk of human error. The evaluation is still running.
Buttigieg was also critical of Tesla’s driver assistant. “I wouldn’t call something autopilot if the manual says you have to keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road at all times,” he told Bloomberg.
Opening of the Supercharger network
Another Tesla project is doing much better with Buttigieg: On February 15 of this year, the White House announced that it wanted to create a reliable charging network for electric vehicles in the USA. Tesla is ready to open the Supercharger network to other brands. This move is intended to help the US government meet Biden’s ambitious goals regarding the climate crisis. According to the White House, 7.5 billion US dollars were made available for charging electric vehicles. Tesla should benefit the most from this, as they are intended solely for the new charging infrastructure.
The US Secretary of Transportation told Bloomberg that he had a conversation a year and a half ago Elon Musk regarding charging stations for electric vehicles. At that time, he gave the promise to adapt some US superchargers for use by other electric vehicles. “I was hooked at the time, it sounded amazing. I figured let’s see if they actually pull this off. And to their credit, less than two years later, it’s moving forward,” Buttigieg told Bloomberg.
He also praised the company for quickly expanding its production and thus being a role model for competitors who now have to keep up.
