Blinken stressed to his counterpart that the incident involving the Chinese ‘spy balloon’, which flew over US soil for several days before being shot down, was an “irresponsible act that must never happen again”. The balloon incident forced Blinken to postpone a rare trip to Beijing in early February and further increased tensions between the two superpowers. Earlier today, Wang called the US response to the balloon “absurd and hysterical”.
Blinken also warned Wang Yi of the consequences for China if it were found to be providing “material support” to Russia in its war in Ukraine.
