US says it has neutralized Russian spy software, which was also used against our country | Abroad

The United States says it has neutralized Russian spy software called Snake. According to Washington, the Russian intelligence service has repeatedly used this software against NATO member states, including our country, for twenty years.

With Operation Medusa, US authorities disabled software that allowed the Russian secret service FSB to steal “hundreds of sensitive documents from at least 50 countries” by attacking government computer services and the media, the US State Department said in a statement. of Justice.

“Thanks to the high-tech operation that turned this Russian malware against itself, the US police force has neutralized one of Russia’s most sophisticated cyber-espionage tools,” said Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco.

Target

According to the US authorities, a unit of the Russian security service FSB was behind the software. The service was named Turla and was based in Ryazan. The software could identify and steal documents and go undetected indefinitely. The Russians were then able to exfiltrate the data (the unauthorized release of data from a computer system, ed.) through the global network of infected computers.

After years, the US authorities succeeded in creating a tool, Perseus, that could communicate with Snake and instruct the software to shut itself down without involving the central computer.

In 2018, German authorities announced that they had been the target of an unprecedented attack by the ‘Snake’ software. The software is also said to have struck in our country, Ukraine, the United States and Georgia.
