Unlike the upcoming Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon, tennis professionals from Russia and Belarus will be admitted to the US Open.
This was announced by the US Tennis Association (USTA) as the organizer of the last major of the year in New York on Tuesday.
The prerequisite for participation is that athletes from the nations concerned start under a neutral flag.
The organizations ATP (men) and WTA (women) currently practice this procedure. USTA condemned Russia’s “unprovoked and unjustified attack on Ukraine”, but made it clear that “players regardless of their nationality” are allowed to serve at the US Open (August 29 to September 11).
In April, the organizers of Wimbledon decided against the participation of Russians and Belarusians, ATP and WTA rejected this step – as a reaction, participants in the lawn classic (June 27th to July 10th) will not receive any world ranking points.
