Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki open in New York: The 43-year-old American and the ten-year-old Danish start at the US Open. As the organizers announced on Wednesday, the two former Grand Slam winners were given wildcards for the event from August 28th.
For Wozniacki it is her comeback at a major tournament, the former world number one only returned to the tour in the summer. At the WTA tournament in Montreal, she served for the first time after a break of more than three and a half years and achieved her first victory.
Williams recently caused a stir in Cincinnati. For the first time in four years, the experienced, seven-time Grand Slam winner beat a top 20 player.
