The US Open sets new standards in women’s golf in terms of prize money.
Instead of the previous 5.5 million dollars, 10 million dollars (8.8 million euros) will be paid out at this year’s US Women’s Open.
Another two million dollars are to be added by 2026. This was announced by the US Golf Association (USGA) on Friday.
The increase is made possible by a new sponsorship contract with a healthcare company. “For more than 75 years, every little girl in every country in the world has had the dream of winning the US Women’s Open,” said USGA President Mike Whan.
This year, the major tournament will take place in early June at the Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina.
