US Open: Siegemund misses title in doubles final

As of: September 10, 2023 9:35 p.m

Laura Siegemund has her third title at the US Open just missed. The 35-year-old tennis player lost in the doubles final alongside the Russian Vera Swonarewa.

In the end it was 6:7 (9:11), 3:6 against Gabriela Dabrowski (Canada) and Erin Routliffe (New Zealand). Three years ago Siegemund/Swonarewa had… new York triumphed, the Swabian also won the 2016 Mixed-Competition in Flushing Meadows. “We played good tennis and the two played a little better”congratulated Siegemund.

Numerous opportunities missed

The German-Russian duo will receive $350,000 in prize money for reaching the final, which is little consolation given the chances that Siegemund and Swonarewa (39) had, especially in the first round. Five Break– and they awarded two set balls in the gigantic Arthur Ashe Stadiumwhich was sparsely attended before the men’s final between Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev.

Made peace with the audience

For Siegemund it was a return with mixed feelings. In the first individual round on the largest tennis stage in the world, she brought the eventual tournament winner Coco Gauff (USA) to the brink of defeat and incurred the wrath of the fans. Siegemund then tearfully complained about the lack of respect. But even before the final she assured: “I have made my peace with the situation in the Gauff individual.”

In the doubles final there were no expressions of dissatisfaction from the audience, not even when Siegemund with the score of 0:3 in the second set on the Court treated. The brief interruption helped Siegemund and Swonarewa back into the game match but after 2:15 hours Dabrowski/Routliffe converted their third match point into their first major doubles title. For Dabrowski it was the third Grand Slamtitle after mixed successes in Paris (2017) and Melbourne (2018).
