Andrea Petkovic explained her decision to end her career after the US Open with increasing injury problems.
“It’s really, really hard to let go and it’s very emotional,” Petkovic said in a WTA interview on Monday (08/29/22) in New York: “I expect myself to do everything I can physically to get the best out of myself. I couldn’t do that this year.”
“The right decision”
Petkovic explained that the decision was very difficult for her. Every training session at the US Open, where she meets Olympic champion Belinda Bencic on Tuesday (around 7 p.m. in the live ticker on sportschau.de), was “very emotional”. “But it’s the right decision and I hope I can hit another one,” added Petkovic, who was recently struck in Hamburg and had to give up in tears.
After the US Open she will take a break. “I have all my things and projects that I am still doing and will continue to pursue them.”, said the 34-year-old. She plans to finish her second book by the end of the year. The long-standing German number two also kept a small back door open, maybe playing a smaller tournament in Europe.
