US Open: Pegula, third in the world rankings, clearly fails

Co-favorite Jessica Pegula failed surprisingly clearly in the round of 16 at the US Open.

In the all-US duel against former finalist Madison Keys, the world number three lost 6-1, 6-3 on Monday, one day after world number one Iga Swiatek (Poland) was eliminated, making it the next title contender out of the race.

The world rankings-17. Keys, who had no chance against her compatriot Sloane Stephens in the final of Flushing Meadows in 2017, is in the last eight, as she was at Wimbledon. Pegula still has to wait for an outstanding result in a Grand Slam tournament – so far the 29-year-old has seven quarterfinals as a top result.

On the other hand, Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, who won her eleventh Grand Slam match in a row and is now facing Keys, is still in the running. Against the unseeded American Peyton Stearns, number 59 in the world, the Czech had a lot of trouble, especially at the beginning of the game. Only after 2:10 hours was the 6:7 (3:7), 6:3, 6:2 perfect, the world ranking ninth is in the quarterfinals in New York for the first time.
