US Justice Minister defends search of ex-President Trump | Abroad

Garland expressed disgust at the “unsubstantiated” wave of criticism directed at federal investigators after Monday’s raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Palm Beach. He said he could not comment on the nature of the investigation and the search at this time. He has asked magistrates to hand over all the documents underlying it.

Attorneys and Trump supporters call the raid disproportionate compared to other cases in which White House officials illegally took official documents or knew e-mails. Trump was not at home and counsel was not allowed to come to the house.

According to American media, the search was also two months after Trump’s lawyers cooperated with detectives after a subpoena. They then came to the Mar-a-Lago mansion, were shown a storage room of Trump’s “souvenirs” from the White House and were also handed documents that they wanted. Trump suggested Monday’s raid was simply to place false evidence in his home in an attempt to damage Republicans ahead of the upcoming election.

Congressional elections are less than three months away and Trump is considering running for the 2024 presidential election. He says it is yet another move by the partisan federal justice system to eliminate him politically. There are more than ten cases against him.
