US government defends itself against blockades in the dispute over student loans

WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – In the dispute over the partial waiver of student loans, the government of US President Joe Biden has extended a freeze on repayments until the middle of next year. In a short video released Tuesday, Biden said he was “absolutely confident” that his plan was within the law. His government had gone to the US Supreme Court to break through judicial deadlocks on the project. In the past few weeks, two court decisions have put on hold plans to waive some of their student loans for former students in the United States.

Because of the high cost of studying and the high cost of living in the United States, many Americans take out a loan and start their careers heavily in debt. Biden’s plan is to partially waive student loan repayments if the annual salary of those affected is below a certain threshold. According to the government, the scheme could put 20 million college-educated people out of debt – whether they have graduated or not. With the partial debt relief, Biden wants to implement an important campaign promise./so/DP/nas
