US government defends itself against blockades in the dispute over student loans

WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – In the dispute over the partial waiver of student loans in the USA, the US government is fighting against judicial blockages. With a request to the country’s Supreme Court, the government wants to enforce US President Joe Biden’s plan, according to a request filed by the Justice Department on Friday. Two court decisions had put plans to waive some of their student loans for former students in the United States on hold.

“We are confident that we have the legal authority to conduct this program,” the White House spokeswoman said on Friday. The government has brought this fight to the Supreme Court “so that borrowers can get their rights quickly.”

Biden’s plan is to partially waive student loan repayments if the annual salary of those affected is below a certain threshold. According to the government, the scheme could put 20 million college-educated people out of debt – whether they have graduated or not.

Because of the high cost of studying and the high cost of living in the United States, many Americans take out a loan and start their careers heavily in debt. With the partial debt relief, Biden wants to implement an important campaign promise./trö/DP/he
