US golfer Jake Knapp has succeeded in a rare feat at the start of the PGA tournament in Palm Beach Gardens/Florida.
The 30-year-old played a 59 and thus the only 15th round in the history of the PGA tour under 60 strokes. The Germans Jeremy Paul (Frankfurt) and Matti Schmid (Herzogenaurach) also convinced and remained on his round with 68 strokes under Par. Thomas Rosenmüller (Munich).
However, just twelve birdies ensured the conversation for the $ 9.2 million tournament. “I knew very early on that it was going, but at the same time everything can always happen, and then it fizzles out very quickly,” said just after the memorable round on the Par-71 course.
On the last hole he tried to hide the 59. “I think if you think too much about it, you only put pressure on something that is completely unnecessary,” said Knapp. A little was annoyed that he missed a historical round: “It seems to me that I would have to think about how it could have been a 58, 57 or 56 tonight.”
The former US Open Champion Jim Furyk (USA), who needed 58 strokes in 2016 at the Tavelers Championships, held the record for the PGA round. Knapp won a PGA tournament: 2024 the Mexico Open in February.
