The new order comes on top of the 20 million Paxlovid courses the US previously ordered from Pfizer. The deliveries of these are planned for early 2023. The additional 3.7 million courses will follow later in 2023.
Paxlovid is a five-day course of two types of pills that must be started within five days of an infection. The drug has particular added value in the treatment of adults who run a very high risk of serious development of the disease.
The Zorginstituut wants the drug to become available in the Netherlands as soon as possible. For example, the consequences of a possible autumn wave must be limited.
