Urs Fischer extends at Union: developer, haven of peace, guarantee of success

Union Berlin has extended the contract with its coach Urs Fischer. This is very good news for the club. The Swiss has continuously developed the team and the club in his very own way in recent years.

Promotion, sovereign relegation, Conference League, Europa League and now suddenly even leaders. 1. FC Union Berlin has been on the up for four years. This is largely due to Swiss coach Urs Fischer. Together with manager Oliver Ruhnert, the 56-year-old has been putting together a team for years that initially grew up in the Bundesliga, then established itself in it and now even – at least temporarily – belongs to the top group in the league.

The constant development bears the signature of Urs Fischer. The 56-year-old has now extended his contract with the Köpenickers and is thus continuing the successful cooperation.

Urs Fischer extends contract at Union Berlin

Union Berlin can rely on continuity in the coaching position. On Wednesday, the Köpenicker announced the extension of the contract with coach Urs Fischer. The Swiss has been on the Iron Man’s bench since 2018.more

Understatement as a recipe for success

“Our goal remains relegation”. Fischer has said and repeated this sentence several times in recent years. The understatement and restraint are part of the nature of the Swiss coach and meanwhile also part of the recipe for success of the club he has been coaching for more than four years – 1. FC Union Berlin.

Over the past few years, journalists have repeatedly tried to lure higher goals out of Fischer. But the coach always stuck to it: You watch from game to game and then you will see where you are at the end of the season. Success proves Fischer right. Even if the remaining Bundesliga clubs are now hardly thinking of a relegation candidate when preparing for the Köpenicker. Rather, the clubs should be prepared for difficult games. Not only in the An der Alten Försterei stadium, which Union made into a fortress under Fischer, the Bundesliga teams rarely find solutions – the Köpenickers only lost two of their last 37 home games. The Fischer team has also been consistently successful and difficult to play away from home, and not just since this season.

Why the Union high flight continues

1. FC Union won the Bundesliga – again. When Timo Baumgartl, who had been ill with cancer, returned to the starting XI, Urs Fischer’s team proved that they are one of the best in the league. By Till Oppermannmore

Discipline, order, willingness to run

Union under Fischer still doesn’t rely on intoxicating hooray football, but rather on discipline, a clear order, good defensive work with a lot of physicality and a particularly high willingness to run (no Bundesliga team runs more than Union). Nevertheless, the football of the Irons has evolved in recent seasons. Year after year, Fischer succeeds in reinventing his team and adapting it to the new competitions.

It doesn’t matter that Union has a fluctuation in its squad like hardly any other Bundesliga club. Big names and top performers keep leaving the club – so far without any loss of quality. Fischer hired the players that Oliver Ruhnert signed within a very short space of time and formed them into a team that gave their all for the club and its fans.

Fans can dream

The coach allows these fans to dream about the table and the current first place, but he himself wants to continue to look from game to game with his team. “The fans are allowed to celebrate. But I look at it a bit differently,” said the 56-year-old shortly before the international break after the win against Wolfsburg.

The journalists will continue to try to get bigger words out of Fischer. But the coach is likely to remain reserved and sober even after his contract has been extended. Ultimately, success proves him right.
