Update for Fritzbox and Co.: All functions and new features

The Berlin router manufacturer AVM regularly releases updates for its Fritz boxes and other Fritz devices. These include, for example, repeaters, powerline adapters, but also Fritz phones. TECHBOOK has the information about the latest updates.

AVM regularly distributes updates for its devices. The updates bring numerous innovations for the Fritz boxes, repeaters and powerline adapters. In advance, the company usually prepares the so-called release candidates in a laboratory for the current major Fritzbox update. New features will also continue to be tested through minor updates from the Fritz lab. Here you can find out for which devices AVM is currently offering an update.

Please note:

In the list we include updates to the official Fritz!OS as well as the latest laboratory versions. Since AVM first tests new functions in the Fritz laboratory, the software can lead to minor problems during operation. Therefore, note our comments that we give about the installation of a Fritz laboratory.

Current Fritzbox updates at a glance

Laboratory for Fritz!OS 7.39 with innovations for various Fritz boxes

AVM is currently working on the update to Fritz!OS 7.50, which promises numerous optimizations and innovations. Until then, minor updates for various Fritz boxes will go through the Fritz laboratory. New software is currently available for several router models.

On the one hand, the DSL routers Fritzbox 7590 AX, 7590 and 7530 as well as the cable routers Fritzbox 6591 Cable and 6660 Cable get the update to Fritz!OS 7.39. The Fritzbox 6850 LTE is also supplied. Fritz!OS 7.39 brings numerous new functions. This includes new routines and templates for Smart Home, a caller announcement for calls, alarm clocks and appointments, an appointment calendar for the Fritz-Fons, support for exFAT-formatted storage media and more. One complete list has published AVM here.

The changelog of the new laboratory firmware for the said Fritz boxes is identical for all models and quite extensive. In addition to the innovations, AVM also delivers adjustments in the areas of Internet, WLAN and home network with the Fritz laboratory.

Internet:

  • improvement No publication of the IPv4 address for MyFritz!Net on dual-stack connections with carrier-grade NAT; The MyFritz! address is always resolved to the IPv6 address
  • improvement New setup wizard simplifies the creation of WireGuard connections

WIRELESS INTERNET ACCESS:

  • improvement New message under “System / Events” when a new session key has been negotiated (connections according to WPA3/SAE standard)
  • Fixed It is again possible to set the WLAN transmission power for the public WLAN guest access
  • Fixed “WLAN / Radio Channel” page was not fully displayed with Safari on MacOS/iOS/iPadOS

home network:

  • improvement Detail pages of the network devices have been revised
  • Fixed Changes in a network device’s detail pages incorrectly enabled the device’s lock

DECT/FRITZ!Fon:

  • Fixed Image display for RSS feeds reliable again
  • improvement Volume of speech increased when voice ringing

smart home:

  • improvement Google calendar settings can be updated via a button
  • improvement Routines can be activated and deactivated via templates

System:

  • Fixed Erroneously sent change notice for additional confirmation option has been removed
  • improvement When you call up the link to the laboratory feedback, the Fritz!OS version is also transmitted

What is interesting here is the support of WireGuard for the simple establishment of VPN connections. The VPN solution is faster, simpler and leaner than IPSec and, in contrast to IPSec and OpenVPN, uses a reduced number of
(state-of-the-art) cryptographic methods. Therefore, WireGuard is usually easier to configure.

Fritz!OS 7.31 for Fritzbox 7583 VDSL, 7583 and 7530 AX

A good month after the Fritzbox 7590 AX, the Fritzbox 7530 AX also has the update to Fritz!OS 7.31. A short time later, AVM also provides the update for the Fritzbox 7583 with and without VDSL. The jump to the new version number is primarily a maintenance update that does not bring any major innovations. With the update, AVM primarily delivers adjustments to support provider-specific services and improves the general stability of the system. However, the router manufacturer does not reveal exactly which adjustments are involved.

Fritzbox 7590 AX gets Fritz!OS 7.31

AVM has provided an update for the Wifi 6 version of the Fritzbox 7590. The Fritz!OS 7.31 is primarily intended to ensure smoother Internet connections. In return, the stability for supervectoring (35b) and vectoring (17a) as well as for ADSL2+ has been increased. In addition, AVM has improved the data rates to certain ADSL2+ remote sites and interoperability.

Update for cellular Fritz boxes

An update is also available for the Fritzbox 6840 LTE. The LTE router receives the Fritz!OS 6.87, in which the trustworthy root certification authorities have been updated and the security in WLAN communication has been increased. AVM has also made the following adjustments:

  • Fixed Fixed vulnerabilities in the handling of incoming fragmented packets and aggregated MPDUs (A-MPDU) (“frag attack”)

system

  • improvement Updated certificates and increased stability
  • improvement Automatic software update for Fritz-Fon M2

The manufacturer in turn upgrades the software of the Fritzbox 6850 5G to Fritz!OS 7.30. There are no extensive new functions here. Instead, it fixes a bug with certain SIM card support. It could happen that cards from the provider Sunrise/Switzerland were not recognised.

The innovations in the current FritzOS

With the current Fritz!OS, AVM is delivering numerous new functions and optimizations for its Fritz devices. These should not only increase the performance of the Fritz boxes, but also improve WLAN connections from mobile devices, enable faster and more stable connections via VPN networks and ensure more security in the home network. Overall, AVM is introducing innovations in all core areas such as the Internet, telephony, smart home and home network.

Fritz-Labor: That has to be considered

If an update comes from the Fritz laboratory, other conditions apply compared to the official updates. Because with the laboratory firmware, AVM is testing new functions that will later become part of the major, official firmware update at the end of August or beginning of September. It therefore has beta character. The manufacturer also points out that problems can arise when operating the software.

Users can try out a Fritz laboratory if the current FritzOS is installed on their Fritzbox. Before installing the software, however, the data and settings on the router should be backed up to be on the safe side. Once this is done, users can install the laboratory firmware in the Fritz laboratory on the AVM website Download and save to your computer as a ZIP file. After unzipping the file, the following steps are necessary for installation:

  1. Call up the Fritzbox interface in the browser with http://fritz.box and, if necessary, enter the password for your Fritzbox
  2. At the bottom of the menu you will find the “View: Advanced” footer that you need to enable
  3. You will now find the “FritzOS file” tab under “System / Update”
  4. In the input field, select the path to the previously downloaded and unzipped ZIP file and click on “Start update”

If laboratory firmware is already installed on the Fritzbox, a new update will be offered automatically. Note that the update process may take a few minutes. Meanwhile, the router’s info lamp is flashing. When the update is complete, the Fritzbox restarts automatically. Data and settings are not lost, so the router is ready for use again as usual.
