Fruit and water ice cream is popular with children, especially when it shimmers in bright colors. But do they actually come from raspberries, strawberries, tangerines and co.?
With a fruit popsicle, refreshment to lick is near? However, only rarely with real fruit, the testers from Stiftung Warentest regret.
For the current “test” (issue 5/2022), they analyzed 15 ready-made ice cream varieties based on fruit and water and another ten for self-freezing for fruit flavors and sugar content.
The result tastes mixed: For classic ice cream, the providers tend to use fruit or at least natural flavors. Nine of the 15 products taste entirely or at least partly like fruit, while self-frozen products are almost always artificial. But it contains less sugar.
Every third of the ready-made ice cream products, on the other hand, turns out to be a real sugar bomb. The front runner is the equivalent of 18 sugar cubes.

Hence the tip to parents for little sweet tooth: If you pay attention to portion sizes, you save sugar and calories.
Two organic ice creams in particular made the testers happy: Alnatura raspberry for 2.08 euros per 100 ml and Froobie strawberry for 3.35 euros per 100 ml. Both contain a lot of fruit without any added aroma and relatively little sugar.
