As expected, Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic is absent from the tennis tournament in Montreal, Canada, which begins on Monday. The Serb is not allowed to enter the country because of his lack of vaccination against the corona virus.
The 21-time Grand Slam tournament winner has now withdrawn his participation, as the organizers announced.
The USA also requires proof of vaccination for entry. That’s why Djokovic’s participation in the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season, from August 29 to September 11 in New York is still open.
The 35-year-old is on the entry list for the tournament. However, the organizers have emphasized that they respect the US entry regulations regarding the corona virus.
With a few exceptions, vaccination against the corona virus is still a prerequisite for entering the country.
After winning his seventh title at the Wimbledon lawn classic, Djokovic had confirmed that he was not planning to be vaccinated against the virus and was hoping for an exception.
