Unusual Milan: 5 places to discover at Design Week 2023

THEl return to full capacity of the Salone del Mobile in Milan (April 18-23) carries with it a number of collateral events that are disorienting. Spoiled for choice, one can orient oneself on places that are exceptionally open to the public during the weekor on those waiting for a pretext to be rediscovered.

Valentina Ciuffi and Joseph Grima focus again on charm of industrial archaeology for their Alcove event. The 2023 edition takes place in the former slaughterhouse of Porta Vittoria, 15,000 hectares in splendid decay which will soon be redeveloped by the “Aria” mega-project. Drop City

Exhibitions, installations and talks will animate the Connected Warehouses of the Central Station from tunnel 30 to tunnel 60. Curated by the architect Andrea Caputo, the Dropcity Convention 2023 gives an advance of what (in 2024) will be the new Architecture and Design Center. Among the planned initiatives, Aspen, the Italian Manifestor, which proposes a comparison between some of the protagonists of the legendary 1989 conference in Colorado.

The Villa

Villa Mirabello to be discovered during the 2023 Design Week

Outside the usual circuits, in a Milan that in the fifteenth century “was all countryside”, Villa Mirabello with its garden and loggias is the new discovery of the FuoriSalone. The designer Felicia Ferrone will set her glass creations here, in a theatrical mise en place played on Klein blue tones. Title: Still Now. The Dinner.

The museum

Façade of Casa Manzoni during Design Week 2023

Alessandro Manzoni’s house museum opens to design for the first time. The French maison La Manufacture will bring its collections to the courtyard and to the ground floor, where Manzoni had his studio and where Renzo, Lucia and the others took on their faces and voices. Who knows if wandering around those rooms makes you want to rediscover too The betrothed.

The Corriere della Sera

The headquarters in via Solferino will exceptionally open to the public from 17 to 23 April (Monday-Saturday 11am-9pm, Sunday 11am-6pm). For the occasion, the facade and the courtyard will be enlivened by scenography installations signed by the design studio Migliore+Servetto for Corriere della Sera, Living and Abitare (in the photo). Guided tours of the editorial staff are scheduled, by appointment, to see up close how the newspaper was born.
