Until May 1, the tax authorities received almost 9.5 million returns

Nearly 9.5 million people filed a tax return for 2021 before 1 May. This means that the tax return campaign went “according to plan and satisfactorily”, says State Secretary Marnix van Rij of Fiscality and the Tax and Customs Administration.

This year, the Tax and Customs Administration had requested 6.8 million private individuals and 1.5 million entrepreneurs to file an income tax return. The fact that the number of declarations is higher is because people who did not have to file a declaration did so of their own accord because they could possibly get a refund.

More than 30,000 people asked for help

People who had difficulty with their tax return could get help from the tax authorities. More than 30,000 people have used it. For example, libraries and trade unions and senior citizens’ unions also offered assistance.

Between 1 March and 1 May, more than 650,000 calls were made to the Tax Telephone. Another 4,500 questions about the tax return were answered via social media. For private individuals most questions were about their own home, for entrepreneurs about the so-called result of other work (ROW).

Separate declaration for people in box 3

The returns of people with assets that fall under the capital yield tax in box 3 have been kept separate. The Supreme Court ruled in December that the way in which this tax is levied is unacceptable. However, it was then too late to adjust the declaration program for 2021.

These taxpayers will receive a final assessment from August, taking into account the judgment of the Supreme Court. People from this group who have made a declaration before 1 May and expect a refund will first receive a provisional assessment so that they can already receive a refund around July.
