Unsuspecting Areke accidentally drives into an illegal tekno party

There is not much to see other than two campers, a car with a skeleton and some empty beer bottles on the Hooiweg in Waspik. It sounds like the remains of a party and it is. On Saturday night, the riot police ended an illegal tekno party there. Areke van den Hof is driving unsuspectingly to work that night, when she suddenly encounters many partygoers.

It seems like a morning like any other, until Areke gets closer to work around half past five at night. “I suddenly saw hordes of cyclists. I thought they went out. But then I got closer and I saw more people walking.”

These people came from an illegal tekno party in an empty warehouse opposite Areke’s work. That’s right, tekno and not techno, an electronic music style similar to techno and hardcore. It is a style of music that is often played in squats.

“I hope it doesn’t happen again.”

A special experience for Areke on an early Sunday morning. “You never see anything like that here. It’s normally always quiet. At most a few trucks during the week. But normally nothing ever happens. That’s why I found it so strange.”

It was therefore exciting to open the door of her work across the street. “Fortunately, colleagues arrived quickly and I was no longer alone. I think it’s very scary. I don’t know who organized it, but I hope it doesn’t happen again. They need to board it up.”

The moment Areke expresses her concerns, someone arrives with a number of new locks to close off the site. In addition, the police indicate that they are looking at how this can be prevented in the future and that steps may also be taken against the organizers of the illegal event.
