Unrest at RB Leipzig: Kevin Kampl defends Domenico Tedesco

Worst start in club history

After the false start in the Bundesliga with only two points from three games, doubts about coach Domenico Tedesco were raised in the RB Leipzig environment. For some, even the DFB Cup victory could not alleviate the disappointment of fourth place last season, the worst result since 2018 – critics now see their doubts about the coach confirmed in view of the previous performance of the third most valuable squad in the league. Cross shots like that of the adviser to club legend Emil Forsberg, who had recently expressed public criticism of his protégé’s short playing times, or the still open position of sports director are contributing to the current unrest around the club. Midfielder Kevin Kampl broke a lance for his coach in an interview with the TV channel “Sky”.

When asked about the growing criticism of the coach, which peaked in social networks after the worst start in the club’s history, the 31-year-old explained: “I think that’s stupid, I have to be honest. We’ve played three games now. We saw the situation Domenico got us out of last season. The coach tries to prepare us for the opposition in every game. We sometimes didn’t stick to the match plan in the games or deviated from the match plan in the course of the game. That’s not the coach’s fault, we players have to take responsibility and do better.”

Tedesco took over RB from today’s Leeds coach Jesse Marsch in December last year and has since scored an average of 1.91 points in 34 games. This puts the ex-Schalke player well above his predecessor (1.25 points) and just behind Julian Nagelsmann and Ralf Rangnick (1.94 points each) in Saxony’s all-time coaching rankings. After Kampl’s teammate Marcel Halstenberg recently called the criticism of Tedesco “absurd”, the Slovenian international is also certain that the coach will lead the team back on the road to success in the future: “I think Domenico is a great coach, does it doing a great job and we’ll score points again. Our quality is simply too good for that.”

Kampl has confidence in the RB Leipzig squad: top players in all positions

One reason why the Europa League semi-finalists from the previous season are not yet going according to plan is that transfers have not yet been made. Only FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund have so far invested more money in this country than Leipzig in the summer, but the top newcomers Timo Werner and David Raum, who were signed at short notice, still need to get used to them. “The squad will start rolling,” Tedesco recently announced optimistically.

Kampl agrees: “We have a huge squad, we have top players in all positions. And not just one, often two or even three – that’s a lot. I wouldn’t say that we need more supplies there. I’m not involved in what the club does in the end. Of course, if you can strengthen and if something is still possible, I do think that our club is always on the lookout. But I don’t think you have to force anything.”

Above all, the defensive, which underwent an unusual number of mistakes in the first phase of the season, is considered Tedesco’s primary construction site. National player Lukas Klostermann will be out for a longer time, Willi Orban and Josko Gvardiol are currently out of action with adductor problems. According to a report by “Kicker”, RB plans to make improvements here.
