Unrest about plans to move a school in Maria Assumpta in Torhout

In Torhout, the big holiday starts with unrest about the relocation plans of a school in the Maria Assumpta district. They have already collected 700 signatures for the preservation of the neighborhood school.

So there is unrest, because the umbrella school group Sint-Rembert wants to move the neighborhood school to a large new building near the city in a few years. Carine Wulleman, grandmother of Margaux and Rémi: “I think it is very important that children can go to school in their neighbourhood. Security for those children is so important, while they will now have to go to a large school.”

De Koornbloem has about 150 children from toddler to fourth grade. The new school would be three times larger, and two other departments of the Practice School would also be housed there. Lisa Hemeryck: Action committee ‘preserve the Koornbloem’: “From Maria Assumpta to the city, we have to cross the dangerous roundabout that is connected to the motorway entrance. Then you have the Keibergstraat with a narrow bicycle path and then you have the intersection with the Brildam, that is already super busy.”

Better school

Scholengroep Sint-Rembert is busy preparing the subsidy file for the new school building that would be located in the Ernest Claeslaan. The project has not yet been submitted. Ann Stael, general director of the Sint-Rembert school group: “We would like to realize this plan. Because for the three branches it means that they can move to a modern, adapted building, in a green environment where there are also opportunities for even better acoustics and accommodation. better school.”

The new school building along the Ernest Claeslaan should be ready by 2029. Next week there will be a consultation between the school group and the action committee.
