United States finds potentially deadly bacteria in soil and water samples for the first time

In the United States, the bacterium ‘Burkholderia pseudomallei’ was first found in soil and water samples. This is reported by the American health authority CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). The bacterium, which until now has only been detected in parts of South Asia, Africa and Australia, can cause the infectious disease ‘melioidosis’. In severe cases, the disease can be fatal.
