Herzogenaurach, May 9, 2022 – The brand with the three stripes and Parley for the Oceans are calling for the fifth time to take a stand against plastic pollution in the oceans and protect their future. For the first time, more sports* will be included, making the Run for the Oceans more diverse and inclusive. People all over the world are invited to take to the streets, the tennis court or the soccer field to jointly raise awareness of the pollution of the world’s oceans.
For every 10 minutes of activity recorded by participants via the adidas Runtastic app, Joyrun, Codoon, Yeudongquan or Strava, Parley collects trash equivalent to the weight of a plastic bottle from beaches, remote islands and shores before it reaches the ocean (up to a maximum weight of 250,000 kilograms).
Katja Schreiber, SVP Sustainability at adidas, says: “In the race to eliminate plastic waste, time is against us, so we’re pushing harder than ever. A cross-industry problem requires joint solutions, because sustainability is a team sport. By uniting our sports community around this challenge, we can take action to reduce plastic waste while providing people with an experience where their actions help clean up the ocean.”
Since 2017, adidas and Parley have brought Run for the Oceans together over 8.2 million runners worldwide who have collectively run more than 81.7 million kilometers. Since 2015, adidas has made more than 50 million pairs of shoes with Parley ocean plastic. This is plastic waste that is collected from beaches and coastal areas before it reaches the sea.
For 2022, adidas x Parley has announced the launch of adizero X Parley and Ultraboost 22 X Parley. The adizero x Parley is the first shoe concept with an ecological footprint of only 3.5 kilograms. The model marks another milestone in the partnership, which is characterized by shared goals and the pursuit of innovation.
Cyrill Gutsch, CEO and Founder of Parley, says: “Seven years ago, adidas signed an agreement to support Parley as a founding partner. With this decision, the three stripes showed the courage to face an epic threat: the plastic crisis. Millions of people have since supported us by taking action and purchasing products made from Parley Ocean Plastic, a material we developed to fund our work. These products represent change and bring an optimistic message to the world: we can end the crisis by cleaning up our planet, inventing new materials and, above all, changing our attitude. With ‘Run for the Oceans’ we turn our goals into actions and make our movement even bigger. Help us finish this epic battle. Together we can win this impossible mission and end the destruction of our magical blue planet. Join Parley For The Oceans!”
