The German tennis team around Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber is in the quarterfinals of the United Cup. Despite the bitter defeat against France on Monday (January 1st, 2024), the team moved into the next round as the best group runner-up in the half of the tournament in Sydney (Australia). Greece is waiting there as an opponent on Friday (January 5th, 2024, 7:30 a.m.).
After the opening win against Italy and the defeat against France in the preliminary round, Germany no longer had progress in its own hands. Early on Wednesday morning German time, France first secured group victory with a 3-0 win over Italy – then Greece’s success over Canada ensured they progressed.
So far only Kerber and Zverev have been in action
The mixed nations competition will be held for the second time as a season opener and preparation for the Australian Open. After every two individual matches there is a potentially decisive mixed match. Despite additional players including doubles specialist Laura Siegemund and Maximilian Marterer in the singles and doubles squad, Germany has so far relied exclusively on returnee Kerber and Olympic champion Zverev. After her comeback around ten months after the birth of daughter Liana, Kerber was still unable to achieve any individual success.
