Reinier Honig has achieved a unique milestone at the Dutch Staying Championships. The 40-year-old cyclist from Wormerveer won the national title for the tenth time on Tuesday evening in a packed Sportpaleis Alkmaar.
In Alkmaar, fellow provincial and professional cyclist Cees Bol the starting signal for the race over 50 kilometers, or 200 laps. In the staying discipline, the riders each ride as close as possible behind a large motorcycle, the driver of which stands upright to keep the rider out of the wind.
After more than 45 minutes, Honig was the first to cross the finish line. Haarlemmer Serginho Wilhaus, the winner in 2023, crossed the line second. Glenn van Nierop from Wieringerwaard took bronze and thus ensured a complete North Holland podium at this National Championship.
Unique series
Honig won his first staying title in 2005 and was also the best in the three editions that followed. After his professional career on the road, he returned to staying racing and became champion five more times between 2017 and 2022. Honing is also the reigning European champion in this non-Olympic event.
