Uniper wants to store hydrogen in former natural gas storage facilities

FRANKFURT (Dow Jones) — The energy company Uniper is testing the large-volume storage of hydrogen in the former Krummhrn natural gas storage facility. The commissioning of the demonstration plant with a storage volume of up to 250,000 cubic meters of hydrogen is planned by 2024, the MDAX company announced.

The existing gas storage facilities are designed for natural gas and must be converted to use hydrogen, explains Uniper. This is to be tested on a large scale and in a real environment in the salt cavern storage facility in Krummhrn, northern Germany. Uniper wants to invest around 10 million euros in this.

The proximity to Wilhelmshaven enables the connection to the import terminal planned there for the hydrogen derivative ammonia and a bulk electrolysis project, according to Uniper.
