Even if the chance of the Champions League is great, Union Berlin does not want to correct the season goal upwards a second time.
“Of course you’re hungry. You really want to stay up there, to be as successful as possible,” said the midfielder Janik Haberer before the top game at Borussia Dortmund on Saturday (3.30 p.m.).
“We want to qualify for international business. That’s no secret. However, you have to leave the church in the village and say that we have to give 100 percent so that we have a chance of winning games. If that’s not the case, we lose the games,” said the 29-year-old.
The team of coaches Urs Fischer travels to BVB in third place and has a six-point lead over RB Leipzig in first place, which does not qualify for the premier class. The lead in sixth place, which qualifies for the Europa League or the Conference League depending on the outcome of the DFB Cup, is ten points.
“The chance is great”
“The chance is great, but we have to put our performances on the pitch. It’s easy to talk your way into the Europa League or Champions League. But that doesn’t help,” said Haberer.
The Irons have recently won twice in a row in the league, but each played weak first halves. It was the same with the cup-off in Frankfurt during the week. In view of these performances, coach Urs Fischer sees reasons for restraint. “We don’t have to say the word Champions League. You have to act differently, not like in the last few games,” said the Swiss.
“We formulated our objective correctly by saying that we want to qualify for international business.”
